Singapore Flyer (All Buses Stop Here)
It’s hard to miss the giant Ferris wheel-like contraption in Marina Bay. Standing 165m tall – or 42 storeys high, in HDB-speak – and with capsules the size of small buses, the $240 million Flyer is an observation wheel destined to be one of our biggest tourist attractions. Passengers can stroll (yes, stroll) around 28 air-conditioned and UV-protected capsules, each holding up to 28 people, and on a clear day can enjoy a 360-degree view of the cityscape – a panorama that even extends into neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia. Here’s what you can look forward to on our city’s answer to the London Eye.
St Andrew’s Catherdral (MA2)
St Andrew’s Cathedral is a distinctive and elegant institution in the heart of the civic district. Designed by Colonel Ronald MacPherson in 1856, it replaced the original church which was destroyed by two lightning strikes in 1852. The Visitors Centre at the South Transept showcases a collection of artifacts, pictures and a video of the Cathedral's history. Guided tours around the premises are also available.Marina Bay Sands
Opening in 2010, the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort complex will house a wide range of facilities, including exhibition halls, retail spaces, restaurants, hotel accommodation, entertainment halls and other exciting line ups.
Esplanade
Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is one of the world’s busiest arts centres, officially opened on 12 October 2002.
The original Esplanade was built in 1943 and refers to a park that today occupies 2.4 hectares along Connaught Drive opposite City Hall. In 1985, the Master Plan for an arts centre to be built in Singapore was developed and Esplanade was chosen to be the site upon which it sat. The original Esplanade site was redeveloped in 1991 to enhance the civic districtand while further reclamation work for the arts centre was also began.
In 1992, a team comprising respected local firm DP Architects (Singapore) and Michael Wilford & Partners (UK) was chosen to begin work on the centre. To maintain the valuable links between the past and present, the arts centre was subsequently named Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay.
